To make peace with an enemy tribe, the Papuans give everything they own, in the form of domestic animals, to the enemy tribe. This distribution gains prestige for the tribe and results in the adversary being forced to repay the distribution in the next generation, on a much greater scale, in order to avoid scorn. (1974).

Pour faire la paix avec une autre tribu, les Papous se ruinent et leur donnent tout ce qu’ils possèdent sous forme d’animaux domestiques. The Sudanese army puts a violent end to the primitive life of a tribe of elephant hunters (Mandaris) : Since the dawn of humankind, hunters have lived on elephant meat. Their community considered them heroes. The army, on the other hand, saw them as pariahs and sent them to prison. It was my first encounter with the issue between man and wild animals. (1978)

Chasseurs d'éléphants dans une société primitive : Ces chasseurs étaient les héros de leur communauté car ils la nourrissaient, mais étaient considérés comme parias par l’armée qui les envoya en prison. Our truck blew up in the desert in Sudan. We walked for a hundred kilometres without a drop to drink. We were taken in by King Shilluk’s sentries. During the two months I spent living by his side, I made a surprising discovery. This African King lived like a queen bee: he represented a symbol of fertility for his people and could have as many women as he wanted. The day he could no longer impregnate them however, his throat would be slit. (1978)
